Sandbridge, Virginia Beach, Virginia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandbridge, in the U.S. state of Virginia, was once a quiet, residential neighborhood, but is currently a resort area of Virginia Beach, located along the coastline at the northern boundary of the Outer Banks. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is to the west and entrance is located at the southern end. The area was once known for it quiet, private beaches and lovely vacation homes with its constant tendency to flood, but is now well known for its mini-hotel houses, condos, and constant construction to accommodate an influx of tourists, forcing long time residents to flee. Currently, the ratio of residents to renters is 1:5. Many locals have traveled farther south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Sand replenishment efforts and erosion are prime concerns of year-round residents and home owners.
Local residents used to have the privilege of driving through the adjacent Oceana Naval Air Station installation (with permit) to shorten their commute. A special guard was posted on the south entrance of the base to admit or deny travellers. However in the post-9/11 atmosphere the "back-gate" has been closed down for security purposes.
