Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.
A demon attacks the Charmed Ones with dream dust he stole from a Sandman, causing their nightmares to come to life. In their living nightmares Paige is harassed by an evil clown at a baby shower, Piper has an affair, Phoebe is chased by a maniac with a chainsaw and Leo becomes pregnant with Piper's baby. The sisters must use magic to put themselves to sleep to re-enter their nightmares and unmask the symbolic meaning of their dreams before the demon can move on to additional victims.

- The title of this episode is a play on words to the song California Dreamin', by The Mamas & the Papas.
- Another title used for this episode by The WB in advertising was Dreamspell.
- Actor Austin Peck, who is supposed to be a dreamy soap opera stud in this episode, played a similar role in the television soap opera Days of our Lives as Austin Reed.
- This is the second time Leo is pregnant with his and Piper's baby, the first time was in the episode Siren's Song.
- This is the second time, Phoebe, has a premonition in her sleep. She experiences something similar in the episode She's a Man, Baby, a Man!.
- Paige gets a new car, a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle.
- Paige's dream issue dealt with being kept a secret as a baby and no one ever celebrating her birth, leaving her to feel empty. She tries to make up for this with Piper's baby shower.
- Piper's dream issue dealt with her and Leo's romantic life or lack thereof now that they are married and having a baby.
- Phoebe's dream issue dealt with her tendency towards self-sabotage.
