San San Nweh

San San Nweh is a Burmese writer and journalist.

She was the first woman in the country to work as a journalist and was editor-in-chief of two journals - Gita Ppade-tha and Einmet-hpu.

She was imprisoned in 1994 on charges of anti-governmental intentions and providing information about human rights violations in Myanmar to a United Nations official. She was released in 2001.

San San Nweh has won numerous awards for her work, including a PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award in 1995 and a Reporters Without Borders-Fondation de France Prize in 1999. In 2001, she and U Win Tin were jointly awarded the World Association of Newspapers' Golden Pen of Freedom Award.
