San Pedro Lagunillas is both a municipality and the municipal seat of the same in the Mexican state of Nayarit. The population of the municipality was 7,753 (2000) in a total area of 520 square kilometers. The population of the town and municipal seat was 3,707 (2000).

[edit] Origin of the Name

The pre-Hispanic name was "Ximochoque", which means "Place of bitter jars". With the arrival of the Spanish the place was rebaptized with the name of San Pedro Lagunillas to honor the first Count of Miravalle, Pedro Alonso Dávalos Bracamonte y Uibarri, who provided the resources for the construction of the church and in reference to the lakes of clear water found in the region.

The municipality of San Pedro Lagunillas is located at the following extreme coordinates: from parallel 20º 59’ to 21º 20’ latitude north and from meridian 104º 37’ to 104º 54’ longitude west. It is located in the south of the state of Nayarit and is bounded in the north and east by the municipality of Santa María del Oro, in the south by the municipalilty of Ahuacatlán and the state of Jalisco, and in the west by the municipality of Compostela.

The geographic extension is 520 square kilometers, which represents 1.88% of the state surface. It is ranked 16 out of 20 municipalities in total area.

Most of the municipality belongs to a volcanic zone. The main elevations are "Cerro Grande"(2,000 meters), "Cerro Tetillas" (1,760 meters), "Cerro La Palma" (1,740 meters), "Cerro Estiladero" (1,600 meters), "Cerro El Carretón" (1,580 meters), and the extinct volcano of "Tepetiltic" (1,500 meters).

The main towns and villages are: San Pedro Lagunillas with a population of 3,630 inhabitants in 1991; Amado Nervo, El Conde with 1,317; Coastecomate with 1,005; Tequilita with 661; Las Guásimas with 377; and Tepetiltic with 235 habitantes. 93% of the population lives in these settlements.

The municipality has two lakes: San Pedro Lagunillas, with a width of 1.6 km. and a length of 1.9 km., and Tepetiltic, with a width of 2.7 km. and a length of 1.2 km. There are no major rivers.

The climates that predominate are hot subhumid and semihot humid. The average annual rainfall is 683.4 mm with 90.44% concentrated in the months of June to October. The average annual temperature is 20.4 ºC.

San Pedro is the municipality in the state with the lowest population and has had a negative growth rate since 1980.

The economy is mainly agricultural with the main crops being corn, beans, and sugarcane. There is some cattle raising with 34,214 head counted in the 1990 census. The lakes provide some fishing, mainly of tilapia. Forestry is practiced with natural growth being seriously depleted.

Most of the economically active population is occupied in agriculture (62.8%) while 23% are in commerce and services, and 10.6% in manufacturing. Due to the seasonal nature of the agriculture there has been intensive emigration in the last twenty years, espececially to the United States of America.

[edit] Tourist Sights

The main tourist sights are the two lakes of San Pedro and Tepetiltic. There is also a small museum in the town with displays of pre-Colombian artifacts.

The municipality was founded in 1917. The city government is composed of a Presidente Municipal and 7 councilmembers, all elected for a period of three years. The current President is José Angel Gonzalez Arcadia for the period of 2005-08.
