San Marcos High School (SMHS) is a public high school located near the Southern California city of Santa Barbara. It is under the governance of the Santa Barbara School District, and enrolls approximately 2200 students in Grades 9-12. The school's athletic mascot is the Royals, and the symbol is a Lion, with the official school colors being Scarlet Red and Royal Blue. San Marcos High School was founded 1959. Since 1995, it has been on the block schedule. In recent years, the school has been recognized on the state and national levels in several different arenas. The mock trial team won the state competition and advanced to the national championships in 2004 and 2006, and the school was named a California Distinguished School in 2005. Also, in 2006, the San Marcos Madrigals won first place in a national vocal music festival in New York. In 2002 and 2003 the school newspaper, The King's Page, won First Place with Special Merit in the American Scholastic Press Association newspaper contest. Additionally, San Marcos received a full 6-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in the 2005 school year, and faculty member Eric Burrows was named California Teacher of the Year the same year.
