San José Canton

San José Canton is the first canton of San José Province, in Costa Rica. It enclose San José downtown. The canton of San José limits (clockwise) with Belén, Heredia and Santo Domingo cantons in Heredia Province; with the josefino cantons of Tibás, Goicoechea, and Montes de Oca also by the north; Curridabat Canton by the east; and Desamparados, Alajuelita and Escazú cantons by the south.

San José Canton was founded on December 7, 1848, the same date that the first cantons of the country were founded. The geography of the canton is plain, fertile and bathed by several rivers like Río Torres and Río María Aguilar. Río0 Virilla and Río Tiribí forms the border with Heredia Province and the cantons of Escazú and Alajuelita respectively.

San José downtown is 1161 m above sea level. Zapote distrito is the highest distrito, with 1175 m above sea level, and Pavas distrito is the lowest, with 1045 m above sea level. Thus, the canton is very even throughout its distritos. Its ordinary municipal budget for 2003 was of ¢ 12,688.0 millions. The major of San José canton is Johnny Araya Monge.

Costa Rica 2000 Census appoints that the canton had 309,672 inhabitants (INEC estimates 342,977 inhabitants for January 1st, 2006), most of them living in neighbouring distritos of city center (the distritos of El Carmen, Merced, Hospital, and Catedral are commonly recognized as the city downtown; only 18% of the canton population inhabits these distritos).

San José had, in 2000, 0.94 men per woman, and 100% of urban population. 17.33% of its inhabitants are under 10 years old, and 7.67% over 65.
