Hi

An interesting idea, Smoddy. It'll be interesting to see if it can work. One benefit I can foresee is that it will highlight areas where our cricket coverage is "light" in key areas. Certainly the articles on the major national teams need improving - and the West Indian one is probably closest to FA status. Maybe this will lead to WikiProject Cricket collaborations of the week - we'll have to see.

Immediate observations on what are missing are teams (though you may argue that international teams are covered in the structure of international cricket bit); grounds; commentators/journalists; anything on domestic cricket. Maybe also there should be some side articles too - such as the Sydney Riot of 1879.

The other thing is, as you are aware, we already have articles for many of the areas you already list. Shouldn't we add them somewhere to your list?

That certainly is a benefit. Equally, it is not a disadvantage, as the wikireader is not intended to be set in stone, as it were.
I guess the teams are missing. I was reluctant to fill them in a) because of the poor quality of their coverage and b) because of how often the articles will change. The same goes for players and commentators. I was also keen to see how much is feasible to put in the document without it becoming overwhelming. My intention for the wikireader was to act as an introduction to the sport. Maybe it would be possible to create a wikireader to act as a directory of cricket players. I am just keen for the wikireader not to date quickly. The domestic stuff, I guess, can go into the new Structure of domestic cricket :). The Sydney riot article would, I suppose, go into History of cricket. This is going to be the section that will give the most bulk to the wikireader in the long term.
I was, naturally, aware of this. I was just hesistant because there are some sections that draw on more than one article. Maybe I shall do it an article to a section, if only to give the easiest possible updating method. Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 15:22, 14 May 2005 (UTC)
There are a few players that we can all agree are amongst the greatest - Grace, Hobbs, Bradman, Sobers, Botham, Tendulkar, Lara, Muralitharan (for example) - that should be covered (even if the number is restricted to 12, say).
The teams certainly do need improvement - perhaps these should be the first Cricket COTWs? Kind regards, jguk 00:00, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
Maybe, in that case, the wikireader had better be put on hold until we have a good number of good quality team articles. I think you are right: we do need to set up a collaboration page. I suggest fortnightly, though. Smoddy (Rabbit and pork) 11:10, 15 May 2005 (UTC)
