According to at least one contemporary source he was a Colonel of Pennsylvania Militia (or perhaps Regulars) during the American Revolution.

b c 1730 Ireland son of William and brother of Robert Magaw (American commander at the surrender of Fort Washington to the British).

24 Feb 1767 he was sent to America (perhaps as some sort of crown provision). He may also have served as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania.
