Samuel Jordan Cabell

Samuel Jordan Cabell (December 15, 1756 – August 4, 1818), American military officer:
- born in Albemarle County, Virginia;
- educated at The College of William & Mary;
- left school to join the Revolutionary Army;
- recruited a company of riflemen in 1775;
- appointed Captain in the Amherst County Volunteers in 1776;
- assigned to the 6th Virginia Regiment;
- participated in the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 and promoted to the rank of Major;
- served in Washington’s army in 1778-1779 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel;
- captured at the Siege of Charleston in 1780 and detained until the end of the war;
- member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1785 to 1792;
- member of the constitutional convention in 1788;
- voted against the proposed United States Constitution;
- Republican United States Congressman from 1795 to 1803;
- died on his estate Soldiers' Joy, near New Market in Nelson County, Virginia.
