Samuel Cushman

Samuel Cushman (June 8, 1783 - May 20, 1851) was a United States Representative from New Hampshire. He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and attended the common schools. In addition, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Portsmouth.
Cushman served as judge of the Portsmouth police court, as county treasurer 1823-1828, and as member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives 1833-1835. He was nominated by President Andrew Jackson to be United States attorney for the district of New Hampshire but was not confirmed. He was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1835-March 3, 1839). In Congress, he served as chairman, Committee on Commerce (Twenty-fifth Congress). Later, he was a United States Navy officer at Portsmouth 1845-1849. He died in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1851 and was buried in Proprietors’ Burying Ground.
