[edit] Biography

[edit] World War II

By 1943, Sam Lawson was an ensign in the United States Navy. In his younger years he used to make fun of people in the military, believing they couldn't do anything unless they were ordered to. However, he decided to enlist in the navy after seeing pictures of the Germans actions. He believed it was his calling, his mission, to fight evil.

Under the command of Captain Franklin, Lawson and others captured a German U-Boat and assumed control of the submarine to take it to the United States. However, the Nazi SS was using that submarine to transport a trio of vampire prisoners: Spike, The Prince of Lies, and Nostroyev. The vampires broke free and slaughtered part of the North-American crew, including Captain Franklin.

The newly created Demon Research Initiative sent Angel to take control of the submarine and make sure it reached US waters. Angel quickly took control of the situation, killing Nostroyev in the process, and put the sailors and the remaining vampires to work together to make sure the submarine reached its destination. Lawson, like the rest of his crew, was weary of working alongside the creatures that had killed his shipmates.

During the navigation, Angel, Lawson and Spike discovered that the SS was experimenting on vampires to find a way to control them and use them on their war effort. It was the results of these experiments that the US military was after, much to Lawson's disgust, as he was a firm believer in his side's moral superiority. Spike burned the documents detailing the experiments, but part of the papers survived due to a depth charge attack.

The attack caused damage in the submarine propulsion systems, which would lead it to sink, so Lawson went to the engine room to repair the damage. He was attacked by the SS prisoner, Fritz Heinrich, and stabbed in the stomach. Angel was forced to sire Lawson as he was dying and nobody else knew how to repair the submarine.

After rising, Lawson did as his sire told him and repaired the submarine. Afterwards, Lawson wanted to feast on his former shipmates, but Angel forced him to leave the submarine, and told him that if the two ever met again, Angel would kill him.

[edit] Post-World War II and Present

During the following 60 years, Lawson did as other vampires; he killed and tortured many people. However, he never felt any kind of pleasure or satisfaction from it.

Lawson wanted to exact revenge on Angel for his tortured existence and checked on him periodically, though he never made a move as he found Angel was also living a pathetic existence. The last time Lawson had checked on Angel, he found that he was living in alleys and feeding on rats. Lawson waited, he wanted Angel to have a mission, something that gave meaning to his unlife, so he could take it away from his sire, though he did not expect to gain any satisfaction from it.

Lawson once again tracked Angel by the time the latter had become CEO of Wolfram & Hart. He learned about Angel's team and infiltrated the W&H building thanks due to his knowledge of technology and the rather lax security the building had.

After entering, Lawson attacks and kidnaps Fred, Wesley and Gunn, tying their hands and placing them on chairs with their necks tied around wires thin enough to behead them. However, Angel fought a desperate Lawson and managed to stake him.
