[edit] Character history

Sam Bennett is the eldest son of former a Harmony Police Chief named Benjamin Bennett. In time Sam would also become a Harmony police chief. Sam has a much younger brother named Hank Bennett who is not much older than his eldest son. Growing up Sam was best friends with T.C. Russell and is still close with him to this day. When Sam was a teenager he fell for Ivy Winthrop daughter of governor Harrison when he worked as a lifeguard. The two dated and slept together one time. Sam went away one summer to work on one of the boats of Ivy's father so he could afford to marry Ivy. Due to her father's manipulations Ivy thought Sam didn't care for her so she married Julian Crane. This marriage was set up by Julian's father Alistair Crane and Ivy's father Harrison to give respectability to the former and wealth to the latter. Soon after Ivy gave birth to Sam's son Ethan Winthrop (then Ethan Crane) but she passed him off as Julian's son. Ivy and Julian would go on to have three children together: Fancy Crane, Fox Crane and Pretty Crane.

Sam left Harmony for several years and went to Boston where he saved a woman named Grace Standish from a fire who suffered from amnesia. The two fell in love, married and had three children of their own Noah Bennett, Kay Bennett and Jessica Bennett. They were together for about 20 years.

Eventually Ivy came back into Sam's life and did everything in her power to break up Grace and Sam. Even going so far as to hire a man named David Hastings to pretend to be Grace's husband from before the fire. Also the revelation that Ethan was Sam's son also caused friction in Sam & Grace's marriage as well as Sam's later affair with Ivy and Grace's miscarriage. Grace eventually left Sam and went away with David still believing he was her husband.

In time Sam & Ivy reconnected and after Julian divorced Ivy she eventually moved in with Sam.

In late October 2006, Ivy's secret was revealed when Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald pressed Sam's stressed out daughter Kay to reveal what was hurting her. Much to Ivy's horror, Kay revealed the truth and Sam believed her. Sam subsequently lost it and told Ivy to get out, trashing the kitchen in the process, and telling Ivy that if she was not out of his house by the time he get home, he was not going to be responsible for his own destructible actions.
