Salt & vinegar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Salt & vinegar is a popular combination of condiments added to fish and chips in Britain, Ireland and the Commonwealth.
[edit] Crisps
It, along with Plain, Salted and Cheese and Onion, is one of the most common flavours for potato chips and is one of the two original seasonings. Vinegar solids or vinegar powder are used in combination with maltodextrin to hold the flavouring to the crisp.
The flavour combination is also very popular in English-speaking Eastern Canada (including Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, but not Quebec) and Buffalo, New York. Many add salt and vinegar in their pure form to french-fries. It is best known on potato chips or simply 'chips. Old Dutch, Lays, Our Compliments, Ruffles and Humpty Dumpty are the most prominent brands. The flavour is found sporadically in the US, but in some northern states, it is quite popular.
[edit] UK Brands
The flavour is one of the most popular in the UK and was once synonymous with blue packaging, but the dominance of the Walkers brand has seen its green packets confuse the homogeneity. Many of the best-selling brands of crisps have a Salt and Vinegar offering including Discos, Walkers, McCoys, Hula Hoops, and Square Crisps, amongst others.
As part of the promotion of the brand by Walkers, the footballer Gary Lineker was hired to advertise and this led to renamed Salt 'n' Lineker crisps.
