Salman Butt (born 7 October 1984 in Lahore, Pakistan) is a cricketer who plays as a left-handed batsman. He plays as an Opening batsman, largely because of his ability to both bat for long periods of time, and build solid innings that other batsmen can utilize.

He played in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup and also toured South Africa with the Pakistan Academy team, scoring 233 runs against the South African Academy team. He made his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2003. Eventhough in the beginning there were doubts over his defensive technique, he proved himself with his confidence and is known as a very "wristy" player who favours the off side with his punchy square drives.

Following a century against India in the BCCI Golden Jubilee ODI in 2004 and strong performances in Australia in 2005, where he scored his maiden Test century at the Sydney Cricket Ground, he was chosen for the Pakistani team's tour of the West Indies and India. He scored a century at Jamshedpur against the latter team. In November 2005, he scored a century in Pakistan's first Test against the touring England team and earned the Man of the Match award for his performance. He also performed consistently both in the Test series and in the following ODI series. He made a hundred against India in the 1st ODI of the India-Pakistan series. However after that game, he went out of form and struggled against India in the rest of the series and against Sri Lanka. He was picked for Pakistan's first Test match against England at Lord's but he failed to make any impression.

Butt recently got married on December 21 2006.[citation needed]

Butt was selected in the 15 member squad for the 2007 Cricket World Cup in the West Indies.
