Salisbury House (Canada)

Salisbury House is a restaurant chain in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada It is locally known as "Sals" and it is considered a Winnipeg institution.

It was founded in Downtown Winnipeg in 1931 by Ralph Erwin and was named for the Salisbury steak. Erwin, who disliked the name hamburger, named his burger a “Nip" (which he considered was a nip of Salisbury steak).

Besides their Nips, Salisbury House is known for their breakfast platters, Wafer Pie, Red Velvet Cake, and house coffee.

The restaurant has 20 locations in Winnipeg and surrounding communities. It employs over 500 people and has $16 million in sales. It is owned by a group of local investors, among whom is the musician Burton Cummings.

Salisbury House has a location situated on the Esplanade Riel, a bridge connecting the downtown area with the eastern suburb of St. Boniface.
