Salinas, Ecuador

Salinas is a city located in Guayas, Ecuador, by the Pacific Ocean. It is the seat of Salinas Canton, the westernmost canton in Ecuador.
At the 2001 census there were 49,752 people living within canton limits. The city is an important tourist center.
The community of Salinas was specially commended in the Worldaware business awards 2004 for community based business initiatives.

Salinas is located on Ecuador's southern coast, 150 kilometers from Guayaquil.
It was discovered in 1520.
Salinas got its name because salt used to be extracted from this region located on the Santa Elena peninsula, the furthest western point of Ecuador on the Pacific Ocean.

The weather in Salinas has great temperatures all year round. It has an average temperature of 24º C (80º F), known for its beaches and weather all year round. The best time to hit the beaches is from December to May.

Salinas has many beaches such as Malecon, San Lorenzo, Chipipe, Mar Bravo and Chipipe.

Salinas, is a small place offering the same services a big city offers.
Salinas is the starting point to the 'Route of the Sun' so there are quite a few tourist resorts and attractions that can be visited.
There are plans to build a water theme park here as well which will soon be enjoyed by potential millions of vacationers.
Salinas has one of the most developed tourism infrastructures on the coast of Ecuador and offers the modern comforts of a resort town, and also offers whale-watching opportunities.
There is a vast diversity of restaurants and cafeterias. On the Malecon, just two blocks away from the Barceló Colon Miramar, one can visit the Naval Archeological Museum. This small museum displays the vast archeological richness of the region with samples of the Ecuadorian pre-Hispanic history.
The abundance of these sculptures in the region remains a mystery, but it's known that they represent fertility of the women and the land. These figurines hold a close relationship to similar representations in other cultures of the time, such as the Maya or the far Egyptian culture.
On the highway from Guayaquil to Salinas one can find the museum managed by the community descendants of the Valdivia culture. The museum is ideal to observe the functioning of archeological investigations. Pictures and illustrations show the geological and cultural history of the place. Next to the museum is a 100 year old house made of caña guadua (wooden cane).

In Salinas you can find a big range of excellent restaurant like Amazon, Mar y Tierra, La Perrada de Raul, El Capi, The Plazita, and others.
This small city offers seafood plates like cebiche, cazuela, paella, arroz marinero, arroz con pescado, srhimp, and the like.

In Salinas you can buy, fish and all types of seafood, shirts, necklaces and souvenirs.

Salinas Ecuador hosts world deep sea sport-fishing competitions, mainly for Tuna, Blue Martin and Black Marlin, and Sailfish is also popular.
Many world records have been obtained here.
The scenic bay is full of jet skiers, water skiers, wakeboarders, hang-gliders, sky divers and a plethora of various sized yachts anchored in the bay adjacent to the yacht club.
