- Salen, Mull, a village on the island of Mull in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland
- Salens - a kind of chelating ligand being synthesisable from 1,2-diamine and an excess of aromatic aldehyde. The primary example, abbreviated salen, is N,N'-bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine, a Schiff base formed from salicylaldehyde and ethylenediamine (abbreviated en).
The name "salen"=sal (came from salicylaldehyde) + en (came from ethylenediamine).
Chiral version of this ligand has been reported using chiral 1,2-diamine. The salen derived from C2-symmetric 1,2-cyclohexyl diamine and 3,5-Di-tert-butyl salicylaldehdye with different metals (Cr, Mn, Co, Al)has been used for different asymmetric transformation. Eric Jacobsen (Harvard) is famous to use this catalyst for different reactions.
