The salamanderfish, Lepidogalaxias salamandroides, is the only species in the family Lepidogalaxiidae. First described in 1961, it is only found in acidic pools of water in the heathland peat flats of southwest Western Australia. The species is tiny, measuring approximately 7 cm in length. It is also unusual for its ability to survive desiccation by burrowing into sand when the pools it lives in periodically evaporate.
