Image talk:Salvi Roskam Maher.png

This image was already deleted once, and the poster has added a somewhat different version. Uploader claims fair use as critical commentary, but the commentary is not about the image, but about one of the persons depicted in the ad. This is an ad for a law firm in the yellow pages that was posted to a newspaper's blog, then copied here. I believe the copyright is still held by the law firm. --rogerd 20:23, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- I don't dispute that the law firm of Salvi Roskam & Maher is the holder of the original copyright for the image. However, the Chicago Tribune used it under fair use and republished it in an article criticizing Peter Roskam as a political candidate purporting to support tort reform while practicing as a personal injury trial lawyer and advertising in yellow page ads. The advertisement is relevant and central to the criticism, and qualifies for fair use. Please see WP:FU, which notes in part:

- In my opinion, this image clearly falls into this category. I kindly ask that this image be retained. Thanks. Propol 20:44, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
My problem with the "For critical commentary" rationale is that it means critical commentary of the advertisement itself not the subject. Either way, the article that it is included in has no critical commentary about the ad or even mentioning it in the text and seems to be used just to decorate the page. I'd say the rationale is not valid. --Dual Freq 14:48, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think a strong case can be made for retaining Image:Salvi Roskam Maher.png. The image itself is subject to criticism that is included in the Peter Roskam article, with reliable sources cited.

- Roskam supports tort reform. The Chicago Tribune noted that Roskam earned over $615,000 in 2005 as a personal injury trial lawyer. Terrence Lavin, the former president of the Illinois Bar Association, said that Al Salvi and Roskam promised, "We will never, ever vote for tort reform", when they asked Lavin for a $25,000 donation to a political action committee. Roskam has been accused by political opponents of soliciting frivilous lawsuits via his Yellow Pages ads. [1]
- I hope we can all be in agreement on this issue. Thank you. Propol 15:53, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
That still doesn't seem to be commentary of the advertisement. Although I haven't looked at the rationale's used on Apple Inc. advertising that page looks like a good example of commentary on the advertisements and would require a fair use illustration of the advertisement. This article only needs to explain the conflict of a lawyer who supports tort reform and link to a reliable source. It doesn't need an image lifted from a blog to make this point. --Dual Freq 16:49, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
