[edit] Mission
Conducted by the Marist Brothers of the Schools and serving the children of the lower Rio Grande Valley, Saint Joseph Academy provides religious and moral formation and a college preparatory education in the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. It endeavors to form young men and women who will succeed in university studies, who know and love Jesus, and who actively participate in the worship and mission of the Church, including the Church’s preferential option for the poor.
[edit] History
St. Joe was originally founded in 1865 by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, in downtown Brownsville. The school closed and re-opened many times under the Oblates. In 1906, the school was transferred to the Marists, and it has remained open ever since. The school had been all-male until 1920, when Saint Joseph admitted its first female students into the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. In 2004, the construction of the new administration and middle school buildings began. On October 27, 2005 the buildings' dedication took place in the middle school gymnasium.
