[edit] History

The creation of Saint Edward Catholic Church was one of the final acts by retiring Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy within the Archdiocese of Miami in 1994. Rev. Fr. Michael J. Eivers, one of the pioneers in the introduction of cell groups to the Catholic community, was appointed as the parish's founder and first pastor in January 1995. Meeting at first in homes, then a movie theatre and finally an elementary school, the community quickly grew. By 1996, St. Edward had six hundred registered families [1]. By the time the church's three million dollar Parish Center had been completed in 1999, this number had grown to approximately eleven hundred families [2].

Dedicated on January 22, 2000, the Saint Edward Parish Center has provided parish offices and a multifunctioning building allowing for the presence of an adoration chapel, CCD classrooms for over two thousand students yearly and a church with seating for approximately one thousand people. Presided by retired Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy and current Archbishop John C. Favalora, the celebration took on new meaning when Rev. Fr. Michael J. Eivers was named a Monsignor by order of The Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. [2]

By the beginning of 2005, this vibrant church community had grown to over three thousand registered families [3]. The multicultural parish has boasted members representing over seventy-two different nationalities. Given continued growth, it is expected Saint Edward Catholic Church will break the four thousand registered family mark in 2006. Within the City of Pembroke Pines, it remains the first church ever built west of Interstate 75.
