The commune takes its name from St Rambert (or Ragnebert) who was assassinated here in the 7th century. The site soon became popular for pilgrimage and an influential abbey was built in the town.

The canton, part of the Belley arrondissement, includes the communes of Aranc, Arandas, Argis, Nivollet-Montgriffon, Tenay, Torcieu, Evosges, Oncieu, Conand, Résinand, Hostiaz and Chaley, making up a total population of around 5000 residents.
