Sage Hill School was founded in 1999, the first year it filed a Form 990 with the IRS. According to its 2000 Private School Affidavit filed with the state of California, it opened in September of 2000 with 35 Sophomores and 115 Freshmen. Today the school has grown to over 450 students in grades 9-12, including its largest Freshman class to date of 135 students in 2006. Sage Hill School was built on approximately 40 acres (160,000 m²) of land. According to a Los Angeles Times article dated January 28, 1999, the land is an agricultural preserve that was obtained in a 99-year ground lease from the Irvine Company. The school has the option to buy the land during the lease period. The construction costs were in the tens of millions of dollars.
