The Saga of The Three Kings is the end to Yusuke Urameshi's journey.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The saga starts out with Yusuke questioning his own purpose in life. Yusuke had previously killed the rogue spirit detective, Sensui, and has no idea what laid in his future. He's uncomfortable with the way things are and has gotten restless. He seeks the advice of his mentor, Genkai, who sends him off to see the world's first spirit detective, Kouroko. While there, he meets three demons under the rule of Raizen, Yusuke's ancestor, and decides to go back to Makai. Yusuke soon goes there to challenge Lord Raizen, and while there, learns of the conflict between the ruling lords. In Demon World there are three rulers Raizen, Yomi, and Mukuro. They each have an equal share of land and they rule over different variety of demons. Raizen is the strongest of the three, and Yomi is the newest to obtain power. The whole conflict began over the argument of eating humans. Raizen said that they should stop eating them, while the other two disagreed. This lead to centuries of enmity between them.

After receiving a pretty severe beating by Raizen, Yusuke vowed to become strong enough to kill him. He begin training with Raizen's strongest demons. After each extreme training session, Yusuke would challenge Raizen, and each time he would lose. But he would also learn more. During this Kurama sent his mother on a honeymoon, and left for demon world. He was planning on joining with the demon ruler Yomi. Hiei joined with the demon Mukuro. Mukuro locked Hiei within a pit with 500 of her strongest A-class demons. The battle lasts over 6 months, and Hiei killed them all. After his victory, Mukuro decides that he needs a real challenge so she calls on one of her elite demons, Shigurè, "surgeon of the damned". It turns out that Shigurè is the demon world doctor who gave Hiei his jagan eye. Basically he likes to work on those with an intriguing story. He worked on Hiei because of his tale, which the story flashes back to tell. When Hiei was a child he was taken from his mother and thrown from the Ice Apparitions home, which is in the sky. The reason for his exile, and presumed death was that his mother had been with a man, which was forbidden. The ice apparitions had a baby on their own every 200 years, which was always a girl. The only way they could have a boy was if they were impregnated by a man. Hiei's mother had twins, the girl being Yukina. Hiei was given a stone that the mothers make only once, when they have a child, but due to having twins, Hiei's mother made two, one given to him and the other to Yukina. Hiei grew up loving to kill those larger than him in an effort to become stronger so he could kill his people. He was shunned by other demons because of his blood-lust for killing. Eventually his stone was lost in battle, so he sought out Shigure for implant of the Jagan eye in order to find it, and his sister, who he believed would have the other stone.

Hiei eventually got back to the home of the ice apparitions and found his mother's grave and the woman who left him for dead. His mother's best friend, who threw him off the island, asked for him to kill her as absolution for what she did. He said he wanted her to live in her pain. Eventually that's when he came into contact with Shigurè. Shigurè heard this and decide to do his surgery. After the surgery Hiei tried to leave but Shigurè asked him not to. He trained his sword techniques under Shigurè and raised his demon energy up. Hiei, after reminiscing with Shigurè, is asked to fight him to the death. The fight is rather short, and appears to just be one slice, but is played back in slow motion. Hiei rushed at Shigure, holding his sword verticle to block Shigure's sword. The block pushed Hiei's sword towards him, slicing off his left forearm but giving Hiei the chance to do the same to Shigure. Hiei backflipped, landed, and Shigure ran his ring sword through Hiei's stomach. They both take a few steps, and Hiei, in his last swing, cuts through Shigure's head just below the eyes. Mukuro then takes Hiei and reattaches his arm, healing him back to full condition.

After Hiei's battle, we are taken into the life of Kurama. Kurama's past as the spirit fox Yoko was violent and evil. He was one of the most feared demons in spirit world. Yomi was second in command of his gang. However, he was always craving for power. Once he attempted to steal from a high level demon without Kurama, resulting in losing a lot of their team member's lives. Yoko learned about this and let him go off with a warning. Yomi's continuous uprising, though, soon led to Yoko hiring an assassin to kill him. The assassin failed to do so and was only able to blind him. Such was the cause for his loss of sight.

During his stay Kurama states that to win their objective for domination the three rulers will have to change their second in commands, which for Raizen and Mukuro has already occurred. After this meeting Yomi escorts Kurama to a chamber where for years he has been keeping the demon that took his vision. Kurama, it seems, knew that Yomi would go after the treasure so he paid the demon to take out his treasonous gang members and teach Yomi a lesson. Yomi kills the demon and says he doesn't blame Kurama because he was hotheaded in the past. Kurama calls on a couple of old friends to become Yomi's new army including Jin, Touya, Chu, Rinku, Suzuka, and Shishi Wakamaru. Those six alone are stronger than Yomi's whole army.

After seeing this, Yomi demotes his second in command and bestows the title to Kurama. After the coup by Kurama, Yomi's former second in command attacks Kurama, questioning why Yomi would want such a weak demon under him as Kurama's current power level is around 8,000. After a potentially fatal attack, Kurama reverts to Yoko Kurama and swiftly kills him. At this moment it is noted that Yoko's power level was over 150,000. Soon after, Raizen passes on and Yusuke becomes his new successor. After the funeral, Yusuke quickly leaves to meet with the other two rulers, Mukuro and Yomi. Once there, he proposes that a single ruler for demon world should be determined in a tournament. There are no objections, and Yomi and Mukuro dismantle their armies. So begins the demon world tournament.

The tournament, having over 6,000 participants, begins with 128 separate battle royales of 49 fighters per battle. Notable characters who make it through are Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama, Touya, Jin, Shishi, Suzuka, Rinku, Yomi, Mukuro, and Kirin, Mukuro's second in command. Everyone who was paired in Mukuro's battle dropped out, and the same for Yomi's except his son, Shura, who Yomi went on to beat rather easily. Chu lost due to his "falling in love" with one of Raizen's friends who he surrendered to after becoming uncontrollably attracted to her.

Things pick up during the beginning of the 1 on 1 fights. It starts off with Yusuke beating some giant cat monster in one kick. By the time he's back in the stands, Suzuka loses without his fight being shown. Jin, Touya, Shishi, and Rinku all go on to lose as well. Kurama, in his last fight of the series, ends up being faced against Shigure, who Hiei beat before. Mid fight Kurama transforms into Yoko, but decides that he wishes to leave his identity as Yoko Kurama behind and instead transforms back, being cut by Shigure. On the brink of defeat, Kurama raises seeds that were planted thousands of years before, making a large forest surrounding them both, with Kurama attacking Shigure using sharp branches. The fight ends with Shigure throwing his ring sword at Kurama, which is caught by a branch right in front of his face. The branches surround Shigure, who, without his weapon, surrenders. He then throws himself off the arena, which is miles in the air, because "a warrior doesn't lose twice".

Next, in Hiei's final fight of the series, he is placed against Mukuro. Hiei scolds Mukuro for holding back. Mid-fight, Mukuro tells her history of how she grew up being a slave, even as a child, and managed to run away. She could not break the shackles off her wrists, and they remained there as a symbol of her hatred. Back in the fight, Mukuro begins slicing through the dimensions, leaving lines that upon touching would slice Hiei apart. In what appears to be a final desperation attack, Hiei does a two handed Dragon of the Darkness Flame, which tries to swallow Mukuro but is instead ripped down the middle, knocking Hiei to the ground. Mukuro comments on Hiei holding back, and he reveals that while the technique was not intended to kill, it broke Mukuro's shackles. He tells her to leave her past of hatred behind. Hiei then accepts defeat, allowing Mukuro to advance.

Next, in the final fight of the series, Yusuke is pitted against Yomi. The fight begins with Yomi allowing Yusuke to hit him in the face as hard as he can. Yusuke gets angry and tells Yomi not to play games with him, and the real fight begins. Yomi uses a technique to pummel Yusuke in the chest with hundreds of energy beams, finishing off with a bigger beam, which sends Yusuke crashing through the arena floor. Yomi comes to Yusuke, disappointed that he was knocked down by such a "weak" attack. He grabs Yusuke by the collar and asks what is wrong, to which Yusuke replies "..I don't know what I'm fighting for anymore." Yomi is outraged, since he gave up his whole kingdom to fight in the tournament, and he proceeds to punch Yusuke in the face countless times. Yomi throws Yusuke in the air, hitting him more, until Yusuke snaps out of his trance and hits Yomi back into the ground. From there the fight escalates and becomes more equal as Yusuke uses the power of the Mazoku. Yomi blocks a point blank spirit gun using his Demonic Absorption Wall, and this appears to cause a stalemate as Yusuke continually fires his spirit gun at Yomi, which seems to have no effect. Yomi starts to get cut, and notices that Yusuke is blending Spirit energy with Demon energy. Yusuke charges up a giant Spirit Gun, breaking trough the defense wall. Yomi and Yusuke go on to punch each other repeatedly, until it comes down to one final punch. Yusuke is knocked out, though Yomi remains standing, making him the winner.

Yusuke doesn't wake up until 1 week later, and finds out from his friends that the tournament is already over. He is shocked to learn that instead of Yomi or Mukuro, who were heavily favored to win the tournament, the winner was Enki, an old "sparring buddy" of Raizen's. It is revealed that Mukuro didn't seem to have the hatred to use her full power, due to Hiei's actions, and Yomi was too drained of power to win the next fight. Luckily, Enki makes a new law stating that demons are forbidden to cause trouble in the human world.
