[edit] History

Throughout its history, SNBNY has maintained a considerably high managed growth, while ranking as one of the soundest banks in the country. SNBNY was named among the top 20 banks in Crain's New York Business' list of the New York area's largest banks ranked by holding company assets and has earned three stars, the highest ranking from Veribanc, an independent firm that evaluates the soundness and safety of banks.

On March 8, 2007, New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau announced the indictment of a Brazilian politician, Paolo Maluf, who stole millions in bribes and kickbacks from public construction projects in Brazil. The DA said that in a period of 18 months, Maluf, the former governor and mayor of Sao Paolo, had moved $130 million through a Safra, New York, account. The account was registered in the name of a confederate, and the bank had apparently failed to do the required due diligence to check where the money came from. However, it was not charged.
