Sacred Space is a prayer website which has achieved considerable fame since its foundation in 1999. It was created by two members of the Jesuit order, Alan McGuckian SJ and Peter Scally SJ, and is currently maintained by the Jesuit Communication Centre, Dublin, Ireland. The site is updated daily, guiding users through a ten-minute session of prayer centered on a passage of scripture.

[edit] Fame

The counter on the Sacred Space homepage indicates that the site has received over 18 million visits since its inception. Most of this traffic has been engendered by word of mouth. The website is now produced in twenty-one languages.

Another indicator of the impact of Sacred Space is that it is one of the the top search results returned by Google for the search term "prayer". This level of interest led an Australian publishing house, Michelle Anderson Publishing, to approach the Jesuit Communication Centre about bringing out a hard-copy version of the daily prayers. Currently, two other publishers of religious books, Ave Maria Press and Veritas, also bring out annual volumes of Sacred Space - The Prayer Book.
