Sacred Heart Hospital (Cumberland)

Located at 900 Seton Drive, Sacred Heart Hospital is the central hospital serving the Greater Cumberland, Maryland region. Sacred Heart Hospital was first incorporated as Allegany Hospital in 1905 and moved from its original site on Decatur Street to the Seton Drive facility in 1967. The Daughters of Charity have been part of Sacred Heart since 1911, when they were asked to come to Cumberland to operate the hospital. Sacred Heart Hospital became part of the Daughters of Charity National Health System when the national system was formed in 1986. In 1999, the Daughters of Charity National Health System merged with the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System to create Ascension Health, one of the largest not-for-profit healthcare systems in the country.
In an effort to effectively manage local healthcare resources, Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospital joined together in April 1996 to form the Western Maryland Health System (WMHS). Working together, the two hospitals have been able to expand the range of healthcare services available to local residents and successfully meet the challenges associated with an ever-changing healthcare industry.
The Heart Institute at WMHS opened in November 2000 on the Sacred Heart Campus and provides a complete range of cardiac diagnostic and treatment services. The Heart Institute includes an open-heart surgery program and an interventional cardiology program that features angioplasty and is the only program of its kind in Maryland west of Baltimore.
WMHS provides a full range of cancer services, including diagnostic testing; a wide array of treatment services, including radiation oncology; hospice services, and many patient support services. These oncology services are being centralized on the Sacred Heart Campus and an expanded outpatient oncology center opened in April 2001.
Sacred Heart houses a 16-bed extended care facility, and there is a 29-bed inpatient psychiatric unit on the Sacred Heart campus. An adult medical day care program is located at an off-site location on Oldtown Road in Cumberland.
