[edit] Note: The tag is correct ("fair use of currency", NOT "U.S. government work")
The U.S. Mint website states that "(i)n addition to works of the U.S Government (as defined in 17 U.S.C. ยง 101), this site also contains matter covered by copyright licensed to the U.S. Mint and owned by third parties or assigned to and owned by the U.S. Mint"; it further goes on to state specifically that "copyrights in the Dollar Coin Obverse Design featuring Sacagawea ... have been assigned to and are owned by the United States Mint." [1]
Since Glenna Goodacre was NOT a U.S. government employee when she designed the obverse, she was legally entitled to copyright the design, then assign that copyright to the U.S. Mint. Therefore, the current tag (i.e., a fair-use image of currency) is correct; it should NEVER be replaced with a "U.S. government work" tag.
There is no pending dispute as to this image, but due to the unusual circumstances surrounding it, I am adding this to the talk page to head off future disputes. --RBBrittain 20:27, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
