[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Karz was a man who had never known defeat. The huge Mongol was now the leader of an army of mercenaries in a hidden valley in the Hindu Kush Mountains bordering on Afghanistan. He did have one problem though; he lacked a couple of top lieutenants to command two sections of his growing army.

Sir Gerald Tarrant, who runs a secret service organization under the British government, has noticed that many mercenaries are being recruited by some unknown employer and disappearing. This worries Sir Gerald, and he asks Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin to look into the matter.

So Modesty and Willie are looking for Karz (without knowing who they're looking for), and Karz is looking to forcibly recruit Modesty and Willie. Karz' lever: the kidnapping of Lucille, a child dear to Modesty and Willie. Karz' mission, which Modesty and Willie must now actively work towards, is the ultimate heist caper: Taking over oil-rich Kuwait by military force. (And Peter O'Donnell wrote this book long before Saddam Hussein got the same idea.)
