Sabah Electricity

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) generates, transmits and distributes electricity. It is the only power utility company in Sabah, Malaysia.
There are 361,400 customers distributed over a wide area of 74,000 sq.km with 83% of the customers as domestic customers contributing only 28% of the sale.
Staff number is 2,100 persons.

[edit] Generation capacity
The total generation capacity is 785 MW, 59% (2,004.8 GWh) of the total units generated are purchased from the independent power producers. Number of station is 54 (including 5 IPP).
Energy generated Generated For FY 2005 is 1,386.4 GWh (SESB) & 2,004.8 GWh (IPP)
The installed capacity of the West Coast Grid which supplies electricity to Kota Kinabalu, Federal Territory Labuan, Keningau, Beaufort, Papar, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Kudat is 488.4 MW and the maximum demand is 376.5 MW.
The East Coast Grid 132kV Transmission Line connecting the major towns in the East Coast has an installed capacity of 333.02 MW and the current demand is 196.2 MW. The forecast demand growth of electricity is in a region of 7.7% per annum up to the year 2010.
A fully integrated grid connecting the existing West Coast Grid to the East Coast Grid will be completed by December 2006, by which time about 90% of the customers will be connected to this integrated grid.
SESB generates electricity mainly from two major types of plant; hydroelectric plants and thermal plants
Hydroelectric power plants
There is 1 hydroelectric scheme with installed generating capacity of 66 MW with 1 dams in operation and several mini hydro schemes:
Tenom Pangi hydroelectric scheme, with 66 MW installed capacity:
- Tenom Pangi Dam- 3 x 22 MW = 66 MW.
Thermal power plants
There are 9 major thermal power plants with installed generating capacity of 719 MW in operation. Selected major plants are:
- Labuan power station, Labuan
- Kota Kinabalu power station, Kota Kinabalu
- Melawa power station, Melawa
- Kota Belud power station, Kota Belud
- Kudat power station, Kudat
- Kota Marudu power station, Marudu
- Sandakan power station, Sandakan
- Lahad Datu power station, Lahad Datu
- Semporna power station, Semporna
There are 5 plants operated by independent power producers who sell power to SESB, with installed capacity totalling 317 MW:
- ARL - 50 MW
- Powertron - 136 MW
- Serudong Power - 37 MW
- SPC Energy Services - 34 MW
- Stratavest - 60 MW
