S.O.S. Mathematics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
S.O.S. Mathematics is a website that provides students with math-related materials, intended to refresh or reinforce what students already know about mathematics. Included on the website are reviews for algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and differential equations, as well as useful references such as a catalog of trigonometric identities and a table of integrals.
S.O.S. Mathematics is owned and operated by Math Medics L.L.C., an organization that "designs, publishes, and markets mathematical educational material and software." Math Medics L.L.C. consists of Mohamed Khamsi, Helmut Knaust, and Nancy Marcus, all three of whom are professors in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso.
A notable part of the website is the S.O.S. Mathematics Cyberboard, a web forum based on the phpBB open-source bulletin board package, where students, tutors, and teachers alike may discuss math problems. In particular, the Cyberboard incorporates a LaTeX extension by Benjamin Zeiss, which allows forum members to write and display math formulae using LaTeX commands, effectively overcoming the limitations of the ASCII character set. On a typical day, the site and its Cyberboard receive more than 800 visitors every hour.
