S.Muthiah is a well known journalist and columnist who is an authority on Madras (Chennai), and the British occupation in South India.

He has written several books including "Madras Discovered", "Madras - The Gracious City", "Tales of Old and New Madras", "The Parry Story", "Getting India on the Move", and "Words in Indian English". He has also edited geography text books and atlases for the Oxford University Press. He currently writes a weekly column for The Hindu.

Muthiah was educated in Ceylon, India, and the United States. He was a journalist with The Times of Ceylon before moving to Madras.
