[edit] The name
The last element is the old district name Odal (Norse Ódalr). The first element of this is ó, a sideform of á f 'river' (here Glomma). The last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'.
The first element Sør- ('southern') was added after 1819 when the parish Odal was divided in two. (See Nord-Odal.)
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1992). It shows three keys (to represent the three parishes of Oppstad, Strøm and Ulleren).
[edit] Economy
The economy is based on a mix of manufacturing, farming and services. Skarnes has a train connection to Oslo. Skarnes is also the home of Øystein Sunde - a great Norwegian songwriter and entertainer.
