Síl nÁedo Sláine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Síl nÁedo Sláine is the name of the "seed" or descendants of Áed Sláine (Áed Sláine mac Diarmato), son of Diarmait mac Cerbaill. Part of the Southern Uí Néill — they were the kings of Brega (Meath) — they traced their descent to Niall Noígiallach and his son Conall Cremthainne.

Related kindreds descended through Conall Cremthainne and Diarmait mac Cerbaill included the Clann Cholmáin, the kings of Uisnech, descended from Áed Sláine's elder brother Colmán Már, and the less important Clann Cholmáin Bicc (or the Caílle Follamain), descendants of the middle brother, Colmán Bec.

Prominent in early times, the Síl nÁedo Sláine were of minor importance in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Important kings of Síl nÁedo Sláine included:

  • Blathmac mac Áedo Sláine (died 665) and Diarmait mac Áedo Sláine (died 665) kings of Brega and High Kings of Ireland jointly
  • Congalach Cnogba (died 956) king of Brega and king of Ireland, matrilineally descended from Clann Cholmáin
