Coordinates: 23°05′26″S, 45°11′25″W São José do Barreiro (São José in Portuguese means Saint Joseph) is a municipality/county in the microrregion of Bananal in the eastern part of the state of São Paulo in Brazil bordering with state of Rio de Janeiro to the north and south. The population in 2004 was 4,251, the density was 7.37/km² and the area is 571 km². A part of the municipality includes the Serra da Bocaina National Park which is mainly located to the south and is located near the Serra da Bocaina ranges.

Its main industries are cattle and tourism, with some businesses in the area. The city is located in the central of the works of Petrobras.
