Ryo Mashiba (間柴 了 Mashiba Ryō?) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Fighting Spirit (Japanese Title - はじめの一歩, Hajime no Ippo). He is one of the darker character in the series, but has shown his lighter and good natured side from time to time. He lives with his sister, Kumi Mashiba, whom he is very protective of. Their parents are deceased, having died in an accident when Mashiba was in school. He is well known for his hitman style of boxing that utilizes one of his specialties, the flicker jab; both of which appear to be modeled after Thomas Hearns. His other specialty is a close range chopping right.

Mashiba's parents died in an accident when he and his younger sister were still young. At their parent's graves, Mashiba made two vows. The first was that he wouldn't rely on or believe in anyone other than himself, and the second was that anyone that touched his sister would pay for it. He tended to ostracize himself from virtually everyone but his sister. His attitude has gotten him fired from many jobs before.

- Ryo Mashiba vs Ichiro Miyata
- This was the Featherweight semi-finals match (4 rounder) of the East Japan Rookie King Tournament. Mashiba won by KO 2 minutes and 22 seconds into the 3rd round. He downed Miyata with a left hook. This match is where Mashiba cheats by purposely stepping on Miyata's foot as he punched him, causing Miyata's foot to sprain. Though it was believed to be an accident, Mashiba had become desperate to win.
- Ryo Mashiba vs Ippo Makunouchi
- This was the Featherwight final match (4 rounder) of the East Japan Rookie King Tournament. Makunouchi won by KO 2 minutes and 13 seconds into the 3rd round. Mashiba was downed with Right Uppercut to a Right Straight combo. During the match, Mashiba resorted to blocking Ippo's punchs with his left elbow. Because of the hardness of the joint, Ippo's fist began to take extreme damage. This occurred many times, but it was Mashiba's elbow that gave out first, basically rendering Mashiba's Flicker Jab unusable. When it looked like he couldn't possibly win, a memory of him and his sister reminds him of why he fights. In a surprise feat of will, Mashiba regained use of his left arm and his Flicker Jab.
- Ryo Mashiba vs Unnamed Fighter
- This was the Junior Lightweight Championship match (10 rounder). Mashiba won by KO 2 minutes and 12 seconds into the 7th round. He took a considerable amount of damage as evident by the swollen face and bandages he had when Ippo came by his place to congratulate him, though he still claimed that he won easily when asked how his fight went.
- Ryo Mashiba vs Tatsuya Kimura
- This was Mashiba's 5th defense of the Junior Lightweight Championship (10 rounder). Mashiba won by KO 2 minutes and 30 seconds into the 9th round. This was one of the few times Mashiba was actually afraid of his opponents. No matter how many times he knocked down Kimura, he kept getting back up. Kimura eventually passed out in mid-punch and the referee stopped the fight. At the end of the fight, Mashiba had a cold sweat. Though Mashiba won, he left the ring first. He told his manager on the way out that if Kimura's fist hadn't stopped, the result would have been different.
- Ryo Mashiba vs Ryuhei Sawamura
- This was the Junior Lightweight Championship match (10 rounder). The match started with both boxers displaying their boxing skills. However, things quickly took a turn for the worse, as both boxers realized they would not be able to win by purely boxing alone. Both sides resorted to fighting dirty, using elbows, kicks and headbutts. Eventually Mashiba was disqualified for attacking Sawamura while the referee was still checking up on him.
