Basic Information

Hello. My name is Ryan James, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the U.S.. I'm a huge loser, I couldn't get any girls and since I have no life I decided to spend all my time on Wikipedia. I'm a pathetic excuse for a person. I used to enjoy using the Wikipedia solely because it is so easy and simple to change, and because my erratic social life gave me a lot of time for editing. Now I like it because I've been here a really long time and my opinions tend to carry a lot of weight and it makes me feel important. A bit more about myself: I was born in Milwaukee, and lived in Mequon, Wisconsin until I was 14. I moved to Crystal Lake just in time to start high school. I lived in Crystal Lake for four years, at times both hating and loving my little suburb, but eventually completing high school. In my spare time, my hobbies are learning foreign languages, (I am currently teaching myself Russian) and playing laser tag, which I have had to recently give up. In addition to real-life languages, I have invented my own constructed language, which can be seen here. I have been accused of having the strangest musical tastes of any person who has ever lived, with my tastes running from Spanish rap music (Daddy Yankee) to power metal (DragonForce) to the soundtrack from my favorite video game, Katamari Damacy. I have accepted a full-ride tuition scholarship at University, where I am majoring in Finance and Economics. I am currently a pledge at Phi Delta Theta.

Beliefs

Political
I was a proud resident of the Midwestern United States, although I currently live in another region, and a proud American in general. It doesn’t mean I'm arrogant, however. I think our current president is incompetent, corrupt, untrustworthy, and deserving of impeachment. I'm an equal opportunity complainer however, I think the same things about the current Governor of Illinois - who won reelection despite his habit of signing unconstitutional laws and being corrupt ethically and morally - even though the two belong to different parties. Obviously, I am very interested in politics, and perhaps less obviously, I would like to pursue it as a career some day. Politically, I have a strange set of beliefs, I am probably closest to being Libertarian, although in elections I tend to support the US Democratic Party because they expand government power and curtail freedoms in ways I generally find less offensive than what the US Republican Party does. Had I been of age at the time, I would have voted for John Kerry.
Religious
Always a complicated issue isn't it? If one wishes to split hairs, I am a non-practicing Roman Catholic.
WikiPhilosophical
My WikiPhilosophy is pretty positive, and after having read about various philosophies about Wikipedia, I have concluded that I was a fanatic inclusionist, but then again I joined when we had only 330,000 articles. Today I skew deletionist. I used to hate userboxes and I always secretly wished to destroy them, but I have learned to live with them. I think that notability standards are falling as we get bigger, and I'm fine with that. However, we must remember: To know everything is to lose all hope. (Mainly because we'll be bogged down in AfD discussions if we have everything.)

WikiActivities

Everything's just fine.
Everything's just fine.

I used to specialize in video games and climate, until I realized that specializing in something in Wikipedia is pointless. I still like to add climate sections to cities, especially those in my beloved Midwest, and I like to comment on RFAs when I get the chance. I am a member of the Spanish and German translation projects. I have successfully translated twenty-one articles from German to English at the present time, one from French, and one from Spanish. On July 26, 2006, I became an admin on a relatively narrow margin, and I now de facto run TfD.

In order to have something to celebrate, I like to set RyanGerbil milestones for Wikipedia's growth. The next RyanGerbil Milestone is:

  • The top 10 language editions of Wikipedia comprising 10,000,000 articles.
    • This goal was posted on June 8, 2006, and as of March 4, 2007 has not yet been achieved.

Previous RyanGerbil milestones, which have been achieved: (Congratulations!)

  • 1,000 Featured Articles in a single language edition of Wikipedia.
    • This goal was posed on June 1, 2005, and was achieved June 8, 2006, with the promotion of Iranian peoples.

Also as of 3/5/2007, I have made:

  • 8,089 edits as a registered user
  • 1,404 deletes/restores as an admin
  • 42 edits as the anon user 24.14.99.196
  • 14 edits as the anon user 24.12.123.27
  • 1 edit as 65.79.36.66, my high school's IP address, which was me protesting our block so I could edit from school.

This amounts to a grand total of: 9,650 edits.

A more frequently updated total may be found here. (Warning!! Long load time!!)

  • I made my 1,000th edit at 01:33 UTC on May 23, 2006.
    • I made it to the page Marle, which was also the first page I edited after the sandbox.
  • I made my 2,000th edit at 04:08 UTC on July 5, 2006.

    • It was to delete a time zone userbox template.

  • I made my 8,000th edit at 04:14 UTC on January 11, 2007.
    • It was made to the image Image:Cabanas-coatofarms.png, to remove a dubious license using AWB.
  • I stopped recognizing individual edits after this.

For examples of articles I have written a major portion of, please see here. My main concentrations in the main space may be found here.
