The Russian Wolf (Canis lupus communis) is among the largest subspecies of the Gray Wolf in the world. It occurs in north-central Russia and is hunted legally. Its numbers have declined sharply since the early twentieth century due to a combination of federal wolf-hunting initiatives and bounties, both of which have been largely discontinued since the fall of the Soviet Union. As a result, their numbers have stabilized somewhat.
