Russ Nelson

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Russ Nelson (born 1958) is an American computer programmer, who is a founding board member of the Open Source Initiative. He is best known for his packet driver collection, begun while at Clarkson University in 1988. He started Crynwr Software to support his open source software Freemacs (currently used by FreeDOS), Painter's Apprentice (a MacPaint clone), and went full-time with the packet driver collection in 1991.[1] He has been making a living from Open Source support ever since then. His politics are both left and right of centre, as he is a pacifist Quaker[2] and a member of the Libertarian Party of the United States. In February 2005, he briefly became the president of the Open Source Initiative.[3] He resigned on 23 February 2005 following widely reported [4] anonymous criticism[5] of a blog article he wrote entitled "Blacks Are Lazy". The article[6] has been renamed to "Blacks Are Lazy?" and revised[7] to attempt to make a similar point without causing offense.
