Run for the roses
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Run for the Roses is a name frequently used to refer to the Kentucky Derby, taken from the traditional practice of awarding the winning thoroughbred a large garland of fresh roses. The rose is considered the official flower of the Kentucky Derby.
A song entitled "Run for the Roses" was written and recorded by singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg in 1980 and has since been used as an unofficial theme for the Derby.
