[edit] Single release

"Run Baby Run" was released in July 2005 in Australia, where it failed to match the success of previous single "Why Do You Love Me", despite being the #1 Most Added track the week it was serviced to Australian radio.

"Run Baby Run" was slated for release in the UK on 22 August 2005 and was added to Xfm London's playlist, but the release date was pushed back to 24 October 2005. As the new date approached, there were fears from Garbage fans that the single would flop like the previous release, "Sex Is Not the Enemy", because it has not been playlisted by BBC Radio 1, Xfm London, or BBC Radio 2 as of the beginning of October and because the UK-wide tour it was intended to support was cancelled.

The Garbage Discography reported in October that the UK release of the single has been cancelled. After the announcement, Kerrang! radio reported that it would still be released at a later date in the UK. In early January 2006, The Garbage Discography reported that the single would receive a release on 20 March 2006. However, in early February, the release plans were again cancelled.

The song also received some airplay in the United States despite not being released there, and Billboard magazine suggested that it would make a successful single. In addition, MTV recently reported that either it or "It's All Over But the Crying" would likely be the third single in the US. [1]

[edit] Video

A dreamy, mysterious video accompanied the release of the single. Directed by Sophie Muller & shot on location in Turkey, Paris, France, and various other European metropolitan areas during the Summer of 2005, it documents a day in the life of Shirley as an outlaw/runaway. Referencing the 1980s naturalist approach to videomaking that was often employed by bands such as The Cure and Talk Talk, the video has little to no narrative and only features Shirley in dream-like sequences. Given that the song itself is reminiscent of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven", the video treatment works to great effect. The "Run Baby Run" video is considered one of Garbage's most oblique yet intriguing videos to date.

[edit] B-sides

"Run Baby Run" was backed in Australia and Europe by B-sides culled from the fourth album sessions "Honeybee" and "Never Be Free", as well as an unfinished song titled "Badass (October 2003 Ruff Demo)".

[edit] Honeybee

"Honeybee" was originally written and recorded at Smart Studios during the difficult 2003 sessions for Garbage's fourth album Bleed Like Me.

Slow and slushy, the song centres on the unrequited fixation of someone who has idolised their love from afar.

"Honeybee" had appeared on early tracklistings for the album but was eventually left off.

Drums on "Honeybee" were performed by Matt Walker.

"Honeybee" is published by Deadarm Music/Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) and Vibecrusher Music/Irving Music, Inc (BMI).

The song's full legal title is "Honeybee". It is registered at BMI as 'BMI Work #7519521'.

"Honeybee" has not yet been performed live.

[edit] Never Be Free

"Never Be Free" was originally written and recorded at Smart Studios during the difficult 2003 sessions for Garbage's fourth album Bleed Like Me.

Additional guitar on "Never Be Free" was performed by John 5, and bass guitar was played by Justin Meldal-Johnsen.

"Never Be Free" is published by Deadarm Music/Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) and Vibecrusher Music/Irving Music, Inc (BMI).

The song's full legal title is "Never Free". It is registered at BMI as 'BMI Work #7519522'.

In late October 2003, a simple one track EMI Chrysalis CD-R promo appeared for sale on a music collectors web-site titled "Never Be Free". By the time the disc been noticed by Garbage fans worldwide, the disc had already been withdrawn from sale.

It is still not known if the disc for sale is actually connected to the actual Garbage song - for a start in 2003 Garbage were not signed to an EMI label, they were by that time, and are still, signed to a Warner Music Group label - however the webmaster of the popular "The Garbage Discography" fan-site published details of the disc and contacted the UK branch of Chrysalis about the disc.

Chrysalis replied that the song was an "unreleased and unfinished musical composition" which had not been authorized for any use whatsoever. A branch in the USA then demanded that the webmaster remove all details of the disc from his website as it "infringed" their copyrights.

By that time most Garbage online forums and sites were already buzzing with news about the disc, so the webmaster refused to comply. Chryslais never got back to him, or followed up on their threats of legal action and the furore surrounding the disc had largely been forgotten.

In April 2005 Garbage guitarist Steve Marker had posted a picture on his online blog of a wallchart at Smart Studios. The wallchart contained various listings of the song titles from the Bleed Like Me sessions - including what looked like the song title "Never Be Free".

Garbage sites and messageboards began to go wild at the news - "Never Be Free" had not been listed the previous year on Garbage's website as a track that the band had worked on, and the story of the infamous CD-R was retold.

In actual fact, there was never any evidence that Garbage were ever involved with the CD-R that had leaked, or that the B-side "Never Be Free" is the same song that was on it. The only thing that links the CD-R to the song, other than the name, is that in the November 2003 email from Chrysalis USA to the Garbage Discography webmaster, the song was referred to as "Never be Free" (co-written by John Lowery). John Lowery is the real name of former Marilyn Manson guitarist John5, who plays guitar on the track.

"Never Be Free" has not yet been performed live in concert. When asked if it ever would be performed live, Duke Erikson said he simply wouldn't know where to begin.

[edit] Badass

"Badass" was originally written and recorded at Smart Studios during the difficult 2003 sessions for Garbage's fourth album Bleed Like Me.

At one point Shirley Manson decided to change the name of the song to "Teach Me Tonight" due to the fact that "ass" is an American version of the Scottish word "arse" and she did not want to be seen "selling out my homeland". It is unknown why the change was reversed.

The guitar riff that is repeated throughout this song is slightly reminiscent of the opening guitar riff from the one hit wonder "Tequila" by The Champs. Shirley Manson once modelled topless at an art school show in her youth, and walk down the catwalk to that song.

"Badass" is published by Deadarm Music/Almo Music Corp (ASCAP) and Vibecrusher Music/Irving Music, Inc (BMI).

"Badass" has not yet been performed live by the band in concert.

[edit] Remixes

No remixes, as yet, exist for the song.

[edit] Live performances

"Run Baby Run" was first performed live at the Boston Avalon show in April 2005. It has been played at most subsequent shows on the 'Bleed Like Me' tour.

[edit] Run Baby Run quote, unquote

Shirley Manson: ’Run Baby Run’ is about trying to engineer your own peace of mind and being unafraid to make changes in your life in order to try and facilitate that. [It's] about escape and engineering your own path in life. We’re all too guilty of thinking that peace, love and healthiness are things that we’re all just given".

Butch Vig: ""Run Baby Run" was a song idea Duke brought into the band. We worked on that thing ‘til it was almost dead! It took a lot of prodding but we did it."

Duke Erikson: "I think the song is basically about not conforming. Being expected to go through life to behave a certain way; I think "Run Baby Run" is a plea to run from that. Run with your life, take it wherever it takes you.”
