[edit] Summary
Animation based on from a flight simulator, showing the visual effect of a 5 milliwatt green laser pointer. Part of a previous photo ("glare") has been enlarged to illustrate "temporary flash blindness", with the laser pointer roughly 350 feet away. Laser brightness is roughly 50 microwatts per sq.cm. At this range, the laser pointer can cause temporary flash blindness effects. The original photos were taken as part of a U.S. Government research study on lasers' visual effects on pilots. Enlargement/cropping and animation created by Patrick Murphy with permission given to make this animation public domain. Photo 4 of a series of 4 showing no effect, distraction, glare and flash blindness.
