Rugby league in Canada

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The sport of rugby league has been played in Canada. In the late 1980's and early 1990's, a 4-team domestic competition, known as the 'Tri-Country Rugby League', was established with a total of 4 clubs competing - Kingston (Ontario), Montreal (Ontario), Montreal (Quebec), and Adirondacks (New York state, USA). This competition has since been disbanded, but Rugby League is still played in Canada on an irregular basis[citation needed]. The sport is dormant at the moment, but there were two regional nines tournaments as recently as 2003, one in Ontario and one in Manitoba (see external link below for results).

The code struggles to gain recognition in face of the more popular Rugby union. The national rugby league team has won two games, against USA in 1987 and Japan in 2000. While the Canadian Rugby Football League who organised these tournaments has long since folded a new organisation called Rugby League in Canada has founded with an aim to bring back the game to Canada
