Please explain what your up to, and why. ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:13 (UTC)
- "Elaeocarpus" is a large genus with hundreds of species and a wide distribution across Asia and the Pacific. It is not synonymous with Rudraksha, which is a single species of Elaeocarpus. Other species, like the Blue Quandong of Australia, are not native to India, are not known by the name Rudraksha. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 17:15 (UTC)
Ah, ok, I didn't understand that. Shouldn't this be merged and redirected to Elaeocarpus then? ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:19 (UTC)
- Not really. Elaeocarpus is a genus, the larger category that contains the species Elaeocarpus ganitrus, the Rudraksha Tree. The Rudraksha Tree probably warrants its own article; the taxobox I added can refer people to the larger categories (genus, family, etc.) that it belongs to. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 17:23 (UTC)
I've just come to explain here (after explaining at Elaeocarpus) why I'd moved the article back and made this a redirect. As the two were identical in content, apart from a list of external links, and as the article referred only to the seeds as being called "Rudrashka", there didn't seem to be much point keeping an article here. Could the relevant material be moved from the main article to this one? Is there enough to be said about the species to warrant an additional article? Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 29 June 2005 17:27 (UTC)
- Apparently. Rudraksha are quite a signifigant item, and would likely end up doiminating an article on the larger genus. I think we should go w Tom's advice. Why were you deleting the external link, btw? ¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤ø,¸ 29 June 2005 17:31 (UTC)

- One was an obvious advert, the others were largely duplicating the same material. Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 29 June 2005 17:50 (UTC)
Restored this as a separate article; hopefully Sam Spade can fill in more useful details, and Sam Spade and Mel Etitis can figure out which of the external links to keep. To format articles on plants, check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life. Tom Radulovich 29 June 2005 18:54 (UTC)

[edit] Information on Rudraksha
Rudraraka are the material from which sacred beads (108 in number) are formed from and are very important in Hindu custom. It is these sacred beads that one sees worn on Hindu monks. They are common in Shaivism and Ayya Vazhi. Here are some very good sites on shaivism:
Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami defines rudrarakha from his book, Dancing with siva, rudraksha: (Sanskrit) ""Eye of Rudra;" or "red-eyed." From rud, "to cry," and aksha, meaning "eye." Marble-sized, multi-faced, reddish-brown seeds from the Eleocarpus ganitrus, or blue marble tree, which are sacred to Siva and a symbol of His compassion for humanity. Garlands, rudraksha mala, of larger seeds are worn around the neck by monks; and nonmonastics, both men and women, often wear a single bead on a cord at the throat. Smaller beads (usually numbering 108) are strung together for japa (recitation). Indian legend records that God shed a tear when looking down upon the sorrowful plight of humanity. That tear fell to Earth and from it grew the first rudraksha tree. Thus its seeds are worn by Hindus as a symbol of Siva's love and compassion.

[edit] More stuff like that
Rudraksha is termed by joining the two words - "Rudra" and "Aksha". `Rudra` is one of the avatars of Lord Shiva. `Aksha` means tears. The legend goes that the Shiva had to manifest a fierce some AGHOR to counteract powerful Demons in the ongoing war against gods. When the entire destruction was settled down, Shiva opened his eyes and shed tears. The legendary tree of Rudraksha was born on the very place those tears fell. That is how Rudraksha, known as a divine bead came into existence. Rudraksha is the cosmic boon to the mankind. Technically Rudraksha are beads from the tree "Elaeocarpus Ganitrus" found mainly in South, South East Asia, Asia pacific and China. But even science vouches for its unique electromagnetic properties and profound impact when it interacts with the human aura. Rudraksha is one of the miraculous creations of nature, where the seed is shaped by number of clefts on its surface. These clefts are known as Mukhis, or faces. There are about 1 to 38 Mukhi rudraksha present. In most cases, 1 to 14 Mukhi rudraksha are used for astrological purpose. A particular Mukhi rudraksha is believed to encounter the malefic effects of a specific planet. Although it is advised that a competent astrologer should select a rudraksha after carefully going through your horoscope, anyselection of rudraksha bead do not harm the wearer in any case. This is unlike from effect of gems used for the same purpose. Rudraksha PlantThe power of Rudraksha is manifested in a different fashion than that of a gem. Rudraksha carries within itself unique electro magnetic properties, which in turn empowers the possessor when in touch with human body, or, even when its safely kept in the house. A gem on the other hand interacts with the human aura by providing extra strength to a particular planet. Wearing incorrect gem can turn out to be hazardous if the gem is worn for a badly placed planet, as the bad effects get enhanced. Whereas a Rudraksha is perfectly harmless. Rudraksha enhances the effects of a weak planet, and streamlines the effects of a malefic one into a positive energy. Rudraksha is also known to produce heat, and can turn out to be allergic to skin in very rare cases. In such cases, a touch with the skin is not advised. Other than that, a rudraksha bead is completely harmless. A rudraksha gives profound effects in the physical, mental and emotional enrichment of a person. It also empower us all to enhance our destiny and attain fulfillment in our lives. It is a bit difficult to procure an original Rudraksha, as only few are meaningful out of the many beads that fall from the tree. Still a rudraksha does not gives its full effect till it has been purified and energised through rituals and puja. Any misuse of rudraksha can also cause loss of its powers. A strict precaution regime also has to be followed while wearing it. A proper prana prathishtha activates a rudraksha to give its immense blessings to the one wearing it. One might easily relate the bead to spiritual significance only, as yogis and sadhaks are seen adorning it in most cases compared to common people. It is because a rudraksha can provide high level of concentration, and sub conscious strength to attain certain Siddhis. In a more worldly sense, a rudraksha can give many physical and materialistic benefits as well. Though there are a few claims for no affects of rudraksha (probably because they have not followed the rituals, or the rudraksha is a fake one), there are many who can vouch for the amazing changes it can bring in a person`s life.
