Rudna Glava

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudna Glava, is a site in present-day eastern Serbia that demonstrates early (and perhaps the earliest) evidence of European copper mining and metallurgy, ca. 5th millennium BC. Shafts were cut into the hillside, with scaffolding constructed for easy access to the veins of ore.

It is related to the adjacent Vinča culture, particularly in terms of pottery.

Discussions tend to mention this site with that of the Ai Bunar site in the Sredna Gora Mountains of Bulgaria; this latter culture seems to have had relations with a culture near modern Varna, presumably the Karanovo Vib culture, and apparently, the predecessor of the Ezero culture); this culture has a very famous cemetery with evidences some of the earliest use of gold anywhere.
