Ruby Blue is the debut solo album by Moloko lead singer Róisín Murphy. It was released in the UK during the summer of 2005 on the Echo label, and was released in the U.S. in April 2006. Upon its release the album earned positive reviews from critics, although it was not a commercial succes and did not have an impact on mainstream UK music charts.
Producer Matthew Herbert had previously worked with Murphy as a remixer for several singles she released with Moloko. Expanding upon the electronic music styles for which she is known with Moloko, Ruby Blue sees Murphy experimenting with jazz, rock and pop. On the song "The Closing of the Doors" she multitracks a three part harmony reminiscent of the Andrews Sisters.[citation needed] Herbert's production makes creative use of sampling (for which Herbert is known), including the sound of ruffling paper, wind-up alarm clocks, and many other non-conventional elements.[citation needed]

[edit] Critical reception
The album was well-received by critics. For All Music Guide, Heather Phares wrote that "Murphy keeps the alluring sensuality and unpredictable quirks that made Moloko unique, without sounding like she's rehashing where she's already been".[1] Edward Oculicz of Stylus Magazine said the album "happily represents something of a midpoint between the downright oddity of Moloko's early albums...and the mix of disco sensibility and wrenching balladry of their swansong".[2]
