RPS Group plc (LSE:RPS) is a leading international multidisciplinary consultancy based at 60 offices in the UK with 30 offices in Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, USA, Canada, Australia and Malaysia. RPS Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange, is a FTSE 250 company also named on the FTSE4Good index of socially responsible companies since the scheme's inception. Founded in 1970 by a team of academics advising the Roskill Commission on environmental planning issues related to the site selection of London's Third Airport, RPS was the first dedicated environmental consultancy in the UK. Consultancy firms Aspinwall (now Enviros) and ERM started up their own environmental consultancy practices in the UK within a few of years of RPS, in 1971 and 1973 respectively. RPS is still market leader, particularly in the UK and Ireland. It is also one of the largest environmental consultancies around the world. RPS employs around 3,500 permanent staff (as at July 2006) on a turnover of £300m Sterling (brokers' forecast 2006). The three main areas of RPS' business are: Planning and Development consultancy services for private developers, local authorities and government agencies; Environmental Monitoring and Management services for a wide range of clients in virtually all sectors of the economy and Energy Resources Development specifically for the international oil and gas industry, renewable energy and nuclear sectors.[1] RPS specialises in environmental consultancy, planning, transport planning and highways design, architecture and urban design, civil and structural engineering, health and safety, risk management, water management, geosciences and waste management.

RPS Group specialises in a number of waste consultancy areas and gives strategic advice to both the UK and Irish Governments, local authorities and industry. The areas RPS's waste team works in include:

  • National and regional waste strategy development
  • Waste management contract procurement
  • Assessment of end users & product markets
  • Planning & EIA's
  • Sustainability appraisals

RPS Group was the main technical waste consultancy for Defra's New Technology Demonstrator Programme,[2] part of the Waste Implementation Programme[3].
