[edit] History

ROHS is a 2006 consolidation of former intra-city rivals Dondero High School and Kimball High School Dondero was built in 1913 under the name Royal Oak High School. Then in 1957 a second High School, Kimball, was opened in the city and Royal Oak High School was renamed George A. Dondero High School. At their peak, both institutions had enrollment of over 2,000 students. But declining enrollment forced the closure of Dondero in 2006 and Kimball, following extensive renovations and upgrades, was renamed Royal Oak High School. (It is still undergoing said renovations, even as the students are in the building) Currently undergoing its own renovations, Dondero will re-open in 2007 in a new function as Royal Oak Middle School.

On the last thursday before Holiday Break 2006, a student set a small fire in the girl's bathroom adjacent to the auditorium. There were three more fires and a bomb threat that day as well.[citation needed]

[edit] Kimball High School

The original name of Royal Oak High School was Kimball High School. Kimball was the second High School built for the Royal Oak school district.

[edit] Rumors

A popular rumor of Royal Oak High School was from its days when it was known as Kimball High School where many students said that the school was built on a swamp and was sinking. The rumor elaborated to include that every year when the school was closed for summer vacation they pumped water out from under the school. The school in fact was not built on a swamp, but the area was once a wetland for which a parcel of land does not have to be 'wet' to be referred to as a wetland. There was also a rumor that the pipes, which are fully exposed thanks to lack of ceilings in many of the school's hallways, contain marijauna.

[edit] School Media

  • There are two student papers, the Herald (from Kimball) and the Acorn (from Dondero). The Herald is more school-centered in subject matter, focusing mostly on in-school occourrings. The Acorn, on the other hand, reports on more widespread affairs to increase student global awareness. Both use humorus ads to attract readers, and are both scheduled to be re-named by the 2007-08 school year.
  • Noesis is the student art magazine, providing a forum for student artists to publish their work.
  • The yearbook has been set to be named Legacy.
  • In addition, the school's PTSA publishes a (bimonthly?) uptly called "The Raven's Call".
