Royal Melbourne Showgrounds

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, opened in the 1930s, located in the suburb of Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia is the home of the Royal Melbourne Show and various other events. Part of it is often leased out during the year.

It has also been used to film numerous TV commercials.

[edit] Redevelopment

In December 2004, plans for the redevelopment of the Showgrounds were announced by Steve Bracks. As part of the redevelopment, the chairlift will be demolished and a large tent will be erected over the Grand Pavilion.

Construction work is to start in January 2005. The 2005 Show will be held at the Showgrounds, however, not all sections will be accessible. The project is expected to take 18 months.

[edit] Public Transport

The Showgrounds has its own railway station on the Flemington Racecourse line, only open for the Show and other special events.

Extra trams are also run to the Showgrounds for the duration of the Show.
