Battleship HMS Royal Oak in line astern. Photo dates from period 1936-1939, as indicated by the paired 4-inch AA guns, installed in a 1934-36 refit. This image was scanned from a German propaganda book Mein Weg nach Scapa Flow, published in 1940.

United Kingdom Crown Copyright expired is claimed on this image because:

  1. It is at least 50 years old, Royal Oak having sunk in 1939.
  2. It was taken by a servant of the British Government during the course of his duties.
  3. It was first published at least 50 years ago, appearing in, for example, The Scotsman on 16 October 1939.
  4. It is widely available already on the internet in personal web pages and other sources.
